So Im sitting here staring at the newegg checkout for a nice shiny GTX 480, and Im having a difficult time pulling the trigger. I cant seem to find any real benchmarks comparing 280 sli to gtx 480, more than likely given dx 11 and dx 10 making it like comparing apples to oranges, all I see are mixed opinions, some say the 480 blows the 280s away, some are saying there will be a loss in performance in some games. Im also seeing reviews stating that the 480 idles at 73c in a 20c ambient temp room, and seeing 100c load temps with a single card... its a hard pill to swallow, as those temps are borderline unacceptable to me, Not to mention that these cards ARE overpriced IMO, as is any flagship nvidia card... so that being said, gimme some input! What do you fermi owners think? Should or shouldnt I? I dont wanna kick my own ass again like I did when I dropped 674$ on an 8800gtx back in the day... _________________ CPU:Intel Core i7 920 @ 3.92ghz 1.375v w/ H2O Mobo:eVGA x58 3x SLi Memory:12gb Corsair Dom. ddr3 1600mhz Graphics:2x eVGA GTX 480 SLi @ 900/1800/2000 w/ H2O Koolance VID-NX480 Blocks PSU:Enermax Galaxy 1000w Storage:Intel 510 120gb sata 3 SSD, Seagate 1.5tb, Seagate 500gb x2, WD 1tb x2 Sound:Creative Recon3d Pro Fatal1ty w/ Z-5500 Digi's, Sennheiser PC360 Displays:Samsung S27B550 / Samsung 2243BWX Case:CM Cosmos S OS:Win. 7 Ult. x64

We are in the same boat friend. I've decided to hold off because there is nothing out that punishes my (our) current setup and dx11 is just starting to get attention. _________________ Intel i7 3930K | Corsair H100 | Killer Nic Xeno Pro

Sigh. lol. I really want to. It IS just as fast as 280 SLi...and it IS a single card, but damn man...500 is alot of dough for it. I really wish I knew someone who owned one so I could try before I buy. lol. I really think the increase in performance would have to be rather significant in order to justify the pricetag. _________________ CPU:Intel Core i7 920 @ 3.92ghz 1.375v w/ H2O Mobo:eVGA x58 3x SLi Memory:12gb Corsair Dom. ddr3 1600mhz Graphics:2x eVGA GTX 480 SLi @ 900/1800/2000 w/ H2O Koolance VID-NX480 Blocks PSU:Enermax Galaxy 1000w Storage:Intel 510 120gb sata 3 SSD, Seagate 1.5tb, Seagate 500gb x2, WD 1tb x2 Sound:Creative Recon3d Pro Fatal1ty w/ Z-5500 Digi's, Sennheiser PC360 Displays:Samsung S27B550 / Samsung 2243BWX Case:CM Cosmos S OS:Win. 7 Ult. x64
If you got to have a DX 11 card wait, a couple of more months the 485 is going to show its face
I was pissed when the 285 hit, plus it suppose to be what the 480 should of been, 512 cuda cores vs the 480 in the 480 plus higher clock speeds, maybe they will name it the GTX512 lol _________________ XTreme-G nVidia Driver Modder

I'd wait. The GTX460 is the future of the Fermi line- cooler, better power efficiency, and awesome SLI scaling. Like Goz said- this seems like a replay of the GTX280/GTX285 deal. The GTX485 will be worth the wait I'm sure. _________________ CPU: Intel Core i5-3570k

I have the GTX 480 SC card from EVGA i can personally tell u that my max temps with the fan forced to 75% never gets hotter than 75C. and my room is fairly warm.
my 2 gtx 280's i had were non overclocked models. this single gtx 480 SC is quite a bit faster with keeping the min fps up higher as well as the average and max fps higher than my 2 gtx 280's in SLI.
I had really bad FPS in GTA 4 with sli.... its practically doubled with a single 480, metro 2033 runs amazingly, but because the 485 or 490 what ever they call it is comming out. u might want to wait for it.... but in reality why...... why wait. I had the same problems as u guys when they first came out should i cause of the heat problems ppl talk about etc and so forth... As long as you up the fan speed manually or physically change the Speed up of the fan to the temp the card will never get passed 80C. yeah thats a bit toasty. but my card has rarely gone passed the 77C degree mark and that was after HOURS and Hours of gaming. I hope this helps. _________________ CPU: Intel I7 960 @ 4.1, H2OCooled

I did it. I pulled the trigger. I rolled with a standard evga model, non superclocked, as I never buy superclocked cards. I figure if the 485 comes out soon enough I will do a stepup to it, if at all, as history shows us that these rehash cards they release are maybe 5-9% faster anyhow, (compare gtx 280 to gtx 285) And heat isnt really a concern to me, my 280s already hit almost 100c in some games so Im not really concerned. I also figure I will install it and see how it runs, if I am disappointed with it I can simply return it to newegg and slap my 280s back in, Im going to keep those anyhow to run in my wifes pc to replace her 260. I really hope I wont be disappointed though. If min fps really goes up as much as people say, I should be satisfied. Sure these 280s perform very well and can run anything maxxed out or close to, but I still get the occasional stutter and fps dips, especially with any kind of smoke, dust, or fog in any game, if min fps goes up...these issues shouldnt exist anymore. Besides, I plan on getting a 2nd 480 in a few months when they drop in price...then I'll really be rockin _________________ CPU:Intel Core i7 920 @ 3.92ghz 1.375v w/ H2O Mobo:eVGA x58 3x SLi Memory:12gb Corsair Dom. ddr3 1600mhz Graphics:2x eVGA GTX 480 SLi @ 900/1800/2000 w/ H2O Koolance VID-NX480 Blocks PSU:Enermax Galaxy 1000w Storage:Intel 510 120gb sata 3 SSD, Seagate 1.5tb, Seagate 500gb x2, WD 1tb x2 Sound:Creative Recon3d Pro Fatal1ty w/ Z-5500 Digi's, Sennheiser PC360 Displays:Samsung S27B550 / Samsung 2243BWX Case:CM Cosmos S OS:Win. 7 Ult. x64
Cpngrats dude - you won't regret it! If you're worried about temps, grab a Gelid Icy Vision. I'm working on a review now, but to cut a long story short you'll knock about 25c off load temps.
The cooler's pretty easy to install, but the bundled VRM coolers suck. Some of the resistors were too close to the VRMs on my 470, so the sinks didn't fit. As fas as I'm aware my Gainward's vanilla, so they should have fit fine. Either way, the copper coolers will do a good job and there's more than enough clearance. _________________ CPU: i7 860 @ 3.8ghz (Corsair H100/Noiseblocker M12-P)

Tyty. I think if i go for an aftermarket cooling solution it will be a waterblock. The gelid looks cool, but i really dont want a cooler that is going to exhaust all that heat into my case. We'll see how the stock cooler does first. _________________ CPU:Intel Core i7 920 @ 3.92ghz 1.375v w/ H2O Mobo:eVGA x58 3x SLi Memory:12gb Corsair Dom. ddr3 1600mhz Graphics:2x eVGA GTX 480 SLi @ 900/1800/2000 w/ H2O Koolance VID-NX480 Blocks PSU:Enermax Galaxy 1000w Storage:Intel 510 120gb sata 3 SSD, Seagate 1.5tb, Seagate 500gb x2, WD 1tb x2 Sound:Creative Recon3d Pro Fatal1ty w/ Z-5500 Digi's, Sennheiser PC360 Displays:Samsung S27B550 / Samsung 2243BWX Case:CM Cosmos S OS:Win. 7 Ult. x64

I thought the go was to sli a pair of (1g)gtx460,s ????
They scale and perform better than a gtx480
They also run cooler and you save an extra 50 to 100 bucks
anyone more up to date that can correct me if i,m wrong????
will buying a pair shortly _________________ CPU:i7 930 @ 4.2 HSF:Thermaltake Water2.0 Extreme Mobo:P6X58D-E Memory:GSkill 6G @2000 Graphics:SLI MSI N460GTX Hawk Monitor:LG W2753VOS:Win7 Pro 64Case:Corsair 500R

Yeah thats the way to go for many right now, but me, I plan on running dual 480s, which will be faster than 460 SLi, and Im willing to bet those 460s arent gonna be maxxing out settings in games a year or two from now, when I buy graphics cards, I buy topend, as you get more life out of them. GTX 280 is a perfect example of this. Power consumption doesnt matter to me TOO much, and heat will not be an issue since I plan on throwing both cards into my waterloop. I will run a single 480 for now, since that should be pretty close in terms of performance to my 280 SLi, which given their age, still do VERY well in any game out today, and run just the stock reference cooler on it for now, and when I get a 2nd when they drop in price I will purchase 2 waterblocks as well. 480 SLi scales extremely well and most recommend buying 2 480s instead of 1 because the performance is so insanely good...but I flatout refuse to spend a grand on graphics cards... 490 bucks is bad enough. So I can wait a bit. _________________ CPU:Intel Core i7 920 @ 3.92ghz 1.375v w/ H2O Mobo:eVGA x58 3x SLi Memory:12gb Corsair Dom. ddr3 1600mhz Graphics:2x eVGA GTX 480 SLi @ 900/1800/2000 w/ H2O Koolance VID-NX480 Blocks PSU:Enermax Galaxy 1000w Storage:Intel 510 120gb sata 3 SSD, Seagate 1.5tb, Seagate 500gb x2, WD 1tb x2 Sound:Creative Recon3d Pro Fatal1ty w/ Z-5500 Digi's, Sennheiser PC360 Displays:Samsung S27B550 / Samsung 2243BWX Case:CM Cosmos S OS:Win. 7 Ult. x64

yep! like i thought..... a pair of 460,s would be the go
But then again a pair of 480,s will go well with your 22"monitor _________________ CPU:i7 930 @ 4.2 HSF:Thermaltake Water2.0 Extreme Mobo:P6X58D-E Memory:GSkill 6G @2000 Graphics:SLI MSI N460GTX Hawk Monitor:LG W2753VOS:Win7 Pro 64Case:Corsair 500R
I been debating the same thing but for a 470 as i am still running a single 8800gtx in my rig and should actually upgrade it but if i do i would go for a 24 inch and keep my 22 inch as secondary monitor.. i really cant live without 2 screens anymore. Atm i can only run 1 nvidia card due to have a x48 chipset. I am waiting for the new Intel lot to hit and then i can make a new build again with new cpu, board and ram. Skipping the while i7 stuff.
Just want the 24 inch with hdmi so i can also run my ps3 on there because i dont watch enough tv to delegate a 40" in the living room.. Maybe a 40 inch comp screen though =) _________________ CPU: Intel Core i7 2700k w/ h2O

So i recieved the 480 this morning. Got it installed, I am most def pleased with its performance. Bad Company 2 runs alot better for me now with HBAO enabled. And it didnt go over 70c even when overclocked. _________________ CPU:Intel Core i7 920 @ 3.92ghz 1.375v w/ H2O Mobo:eVGA x58 3x SLi Memory:12gb Corsair Dom. ddr3 1600mhz Graphics:2x eVGA GTX 480 SLi @ 900/1800/2000 w/ H2O Koolance VID-NX480 Blocks PSU:Enermax Galaxy 1000w Storage:Intel 510 120gb sata 3 SSD, Seagate 1.5tb, Seagate 500gb x2, WD 1tb x2 Sound:Creative Recon3d Pro Fatal1ty w/ Z-5500 Digi's, Sennheiser PC360 Displays:Samsung S27B550 / Samsung 2243BWX Case:CM Cosmos S OS:Win. 7 Ult. x64
