ok for older games like CSS and some benchmark tests your GTX 260 and GTX 280 will clock down if theirs not alot of GPU data going on in the scene. I dont mind it to clock down when i am watching a video or doing 2d things but in games. even BIOSHOCK or Crysis has done it.
This will work on any GPU not Just the the ones listed in the Subject.
These GTX 280 and GTX 260 Cards like to be pushed and when their not being pushed. they clock down and can cause some severe performance issues.
I origionaly found this fix on a nvidia forum but the person that wrote it only did the basics and never explained the first half of the processes. SO i felt obligated to write it from scratch with very small details.
This also works great for SLI and trisli setups
Ok this fix uses Rivatuner to make it work.
(Step 1.)
If you dont have Rivatuner GO DOWNLOAD it google then find a download and install.
(Step 2.)
In the main area of the program once you start the program go to the area that says (ForceWare detected) Click the box to the right of that. then a new icons pop out pick the first one it looks like a Graphics card. New windows opens...
(Step 3.)
For this to work u have to go to where it says
Force constant performance level the drop down box needs to be set to Performance 3D. Now you are half way though.
****Note once you do this your card wont downclock at all this is a temporary fix. all you have to do to disable it is turn this last step back to disable.
(Step 4.)
Click apply then ok. a message will prompt you to restart your PC to activate your changes click no because we have one last thing to do.
(Step 5.)
At the top you should see tab bars click Power User. Their will be another promt if u have not gone to this section of rivatuner b4. (cant exactly remeber what it says but it asks if u want to se the message every time and if ur a poweruser. click that ur a power user.
(Step 6.)
Find this
+RivaTuner\NVIDIA\Overclocking
click the + sign and it opens new options
Now find EnablePerfLevelForcing and click the check to the left of this tab ONLY. then to the right up top it should say value
Type in 1 to the right of EnablePerfLevelForcing.
Then press ok
Finally restart your computer.
To make sure its working
Start up RivaTuner and go to the customize box that is the higher one on the RivaTuner menu.
It will open up more icons like the other Customize box we went into earlier. click on the far right icon that looks like a magnifining glass over a microchip. New widow opens and it shows ur current clock speeds, Temps, fan speed etc for your GPU.
Sorry if this is STEP by Step to the finger nail. I made it for ppl that dont ever use RivaTuner. _________________ CPU: Intel I7 960 @ 4.1, H2OCooled

nice find and redo with an easy step by step.
i am one who uses RT for anything that has to do with the gpu. i use this web site to make sure i have my tweaked auto fan setup right.
also here is the place to down load the latest RT

The only way it wont work is if you miss a step. first time it did not work second time it did for me.
Also doing this gave me a big Boost in 3dmark Vantage around 800points... LOL... _________________ CPU: Intel I7 960 @ 4.1, H2OCooled

It does work for me. Good work . I think this should be stickied until Nvidia fix the downclocking problem. _________________ Case : Fractal Design Define R4

I am having issues with this method. The option to force constant performance level is greyed out and set to disabled. I cant figure out how to enable this option. do the 5th step first.
(Step 5.)
At the top you should see tab bars click Power User. Their will be another promt if u have not gone to this section of rivatuner b4. (cant exactly remeber what it says but it asks if u want to se the message every time and if ur a poweruser. click that ur a power user.

Type in 1 to the right of EnablePerfLevelForcing.
Then press ok
then do the other step
also if it is still greyed out click on the enable Overclocking box make it ticked. this box is in the same page as the option to force constant performance level is located.
also what GPU you using. _________________ CPU: Intel I7 960 @ 4.1, H2OCooled

if you follow the step and and do it right. it will tell you it needs to restart or reboot your pc. which i just now got lol. so now mine is forced to use the high performance 3D settings. _________________ Thermaltake Kandalf LCS

see you can go veiw the main post do that read it..... Thats what its their for..
if u have a card that downclocks to save power like the gtx 260 and or gtx 280 do then this fixes the issue were a game that does not have alot of GPU need and causes your GPU to lower its clock speeds because the game is not using your GPU at the level of need the regular stock clocks are set too.
So your GPU Now Clocks all your GPU related clocks lower MUCH lower. so the game that is CPU needed plays like crap.
Overall this helps all games because all games have a Load screen,
And that will cause a GPU to clock down. it would B4 go studder studder right after a 2d load screen etc.... because the Gpu is running at half speed then its trying to figure out WTF and it slowly clocks back up to the normal Speed.
This Trick Removes the whole Downclocking problem and you wont seee the studder right after loading into a game.
Try it out it works great. _________________ CPU: Intel I7 960 @ 4.1, H2OCooled
